Circus Casino Circus Casino Edinburgh is part of the long list of Genting.
I dabble at higher stakes, but I’m generally a $1/2 player. Over the years I’ve managed to win, on average, about $15 an hour playing $1/2. Not bad after the rake of about $14 or so an hour. That would be nearly $30 in an unraked game — if you could get the players, the deep pockets, etc. Truth be told, aside from getting into a regular home game, my best chance of improving my hourly win rate is to move up in stakes. I did that today — at least for one session.
I played $2/5 at Foxwoods for 3 hours. It was the ideal game for me. I noted to the woman to my left, a regular in these games, that the $2/5 games at Foxwoods can be as different as night and day. She agreed. Some games, I’ve noticed, are wild raising affairs — with the typical pre-flop bets getting to $60 — with three and four bets made routinely by some players. On the other extreme are games like the one I was in tonight — all solid, straightforward, relatively tight and sedate players — usually scared off by a pre-flop 3-bet — and generally very, very easy to read. That’s my ideal game — maybe it’s everyone’s ideal game. If everyone’s playing “fit or fold” and ABC poker, then I get to be the aggressive player who can call nearly every pre-flop bet and then figure out a line to win the pot whether or not I hit.
Tonight was one of those games.
Oh, and it helped that just as I was at my friskiest, and had stolen a few hands, I hit a monster on the flop and wasn’t believed. Yep. Ac 9c with an all club flop and a guy betting into me. How could I not win? About $500 in three hours — then home before the snow and in time to spend some time with my wife. Again, what’s not to like.
By the way, the best book to read to get a good bead on how to play in a game like the one I was in is probably Doug Hull’s Poker Plays You Can Use. Al casino rapper. But don’t share that with too many people or those games will become extinct.
By the way, the bad beat was up to $250,000.
As another aside to this aside, the last time I had played at Foxwoods, last Sunday, I came as close as one can come to hitting the bad beat of $210,000. I was dealt pocket Jacks and the flop was JAA. Another player and I got it all in and we flipped over our cards. He had AA. We had two shots at the jackpot. But, alas, no Jacks came up on the turn or river and I just lost my stack (which I ended up replenishing — plus a couple of hundred before the end of the night). True, bad beats are pure luckfests and suck money out of the game — and I generally don’t like them because the huge wins rarely end up back in the poker economy. I think I’m going down to the Horseshoe in Baltimore next weekend. I’ll visit my daughter and fiancee while I’m there — and I’ll write a report of my action when I return. Until then, I’m bracing for yet another snowstorm. It’s times like these that I miss on line poker.
